An Autumn Update

I’m not usually one for cold weather but I’m currently loving the early onset of Autumn. There are a few reasons for this. I love a sweater. I mean, who doesn’t love to wrap up warm in a cosy knit, it’s the acceptable alternative to leaving your house wrapped in a duvet – and let’s face it, we’d all do that if we could. I love the colour palettes. There’s only so many pretty summer shades one person can wear without feeling the need for some gorgeously bold hues. And the emerald greens, burgundy reds and sunflower yellows that are currently gracing our high streets will certainly do the trick. And then, there is the number one reason, the reason of all reasons. I love to shop. Autumn means an autumn wardrobe update. We all have our old faithful items that last from season to season, but usually they need a little injection of new – some key pieces to drag our little old Autumn wardrobes from years gone by into the new season. The clue is in the title. It’s an update, not an overhaul. And so I’ve trawled some of my favourite stores (it was really hard, no really) to bring you my picks to make your transition style an Autumnal walk in the park.

  1. The Statement Tee

For those days you just can’t be bothered. Basically, you can put it with anything and it will not only work but actually look like you made an effort. Call it a wonder garment, if you will.   Tuck it into jeans or a skirt (midi or mini), layer it under a leather jacket or blazer. There is no combination where it doesn’t look great.

  1. The Cold Weather Dress

I love a cold weather dress because the thought of wearing trousers until the warm weather comes back again (ahem, that one day in mid June 2018) is just too much to bear. Wear under a leather jacket or team with a fur gilet, add some ankle boots and you’re ready to go.

  1. The Knitwear

Burgundy, sunflower yellow and emerald green are my favourite hues this autumn.   I’d say & Other Stories and H&M are killing it on the high street front, and then I’ve also invested in the gorgeously sumptuous wool cashmere sweater from knitwear master (or mistress?!) Genevieve Sweeney.

  1. The Jacket

Whether it’s a blazer, a leather jacket or something else, that extra layer is an all-important addition in this transition weather.

  1. The Midi Skirt

There are so many great midi skirts on our high street right now – from the very reasonable Gucci-esque Mango version to the beautifully decadent velvet one from Sandro. Just add boots.

  1. The Mini

Minis are always a good idea and for autumn, I always head for the tweeds, leathers and wools – I’m wearing mine with tights and an oversized knit this season.

  1. The Trousers

Jeans are the obvious choice when the weather turns, but I can’t quite bring myself to give up the culottes so these Massimo Dutti autumn-inspired alternatives are the perfect antidote to denim overdose.

  1. The Accessories

Michael Kors was onto something when he likened accessories to the exclamation point of an outfit. Some well-chosen accessories can really elevate the ordinary to a whole new level and these are some of my favourite adornments.
