If you’re anything like me, your closet has been invaded of late by many an item perfect for the Christmas festivities. Tis’ the season and I am going wild for anything that feels Christmassy and sequins have been top of my list once again this year. After all, “if you can’t wear them now, when can you wear them?!”, I say to myself as I justify my latest sparkly purchase in my head. But alas, sequins aren’t just for Christmas. Oh no, it’s official… we’re actually allowed to wear sequins in the day. “In the day?” I hear you gasp. Yes, and as always, the key is in the styling. So I’m taking my favourite pieces and showing you how…
The Sequin Top
The rule of thumb when dressing any sequin item for a day outing is pairing it with a low key, classic piece to tame that unruly sparkle and if you’re looking to dip your toe into this most flashy of trends then a sequin top is a great place to start. There are so many amazing embellished pieces on the high street right now, from strappy tops to oversized tees but I’m loving this long sleeved version from Warehouse for a bit of understated glitter glamour – shop this and many other Christmas gifts for her here. When I’m not dressing it up with the velvet wide leg trousers, I’m going to be wearing it with blue raw hem jeans, trainers and an oversized coat for a non-festive alternative.

The Sequin Midi
If you’re looking to graduate from day sequin novice to something a bit more adventurous, a sequin midi is definitely for you and there are so many great looks from seriously casual to understated day-appropriate elegance that you can achieve. I love the classic look that comes from teaming a sparkly skirt with a fitted sweater and flats or heeled boots, but my favourite street styles that I’m seeing are those channeling “cool girl” vibes – pairing sequin midis with some combination of old school tees, leather jackets, oversized sweaters and trainers.

The Sequin Dress
I’ll admit that sequin dresses in the day are perhaps not for the faint hearted. But it can be done and it depends on how much you want to underplay your sequin mainstay as to how you style it. You could easily throw an oversized, cropped sweater over the top, transforming your full on sparkling dress into a hint of a skirt instead. Or you can adopt the “I’ll do whatever I please” attitude, embrace the neck to knee sequins and just add a jacket or oversized coat to the mix with your choice of flats. But I’m also loving Chiara Ferragni’s 60s inspired ensemble so I’m going with this cute cashmere sweater (which I’d probably size up to accommodate over the Warehouse dress I’ve chosen) and a similar mix of playful accessories.
